Partnering to Protect Our Environment

The Cleveland-Cliffs Foundation partners with the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation through specific funds that are focused on conservation projects near our operational hubs. Through the Sustain Our Great Lakes Fund, the Chi-Cal Rivers Fund and the Southeast Michigan Resilience Fund, we advance environmental conservation near our facilities for the benefit of our local communities and beyond.

In 2022, these three funds awarded $18.1 million to more than 50 projects. Additionally, we indirectly support the important work done by organizations such as the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 2022, Cliffs was proud to expand our support to include the Central Appalachia Habitat Stewardship Fund. This fund will expand our partnership to support projects located in the Appalachian regions of Maryland, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

With support from the Sustain Our Great Lakes program, Minnesota Land Trust staff maintain a submerged net used as a barrier to prevent carp from disturbing seeded wild rice beds prior to germination in the St. Louis River Estuary.
